SANTA BARBARA, CA – August 14, 2007 ¬– When Navy Corpsman Aaron T. Newton deployed for his third tour in Iraq, SelectRemedy wanted to help. Aaron’s wife, Jaime Hillman, is an Executive Assistant to Select’s president, Paul Sorensen, who also has three cousins preparing to deploy to Iraq.
“My cousin, Marc Anderson, is in the Army Reserves and has served in Iraq,” said Sorensen. “He mentioned that the worst accident they experienced was when a member of their unit got lost while trying to navigate unfamiliar terrain in the Iraqi desert.” After hearing of their cousin’s experience, Paul and his brother, SelectRemedy’s Chairman and CEO Steve Sorensen, decided to launch Select’s Project GPS.
At the company’s Managers Meeting on July 12, 2007, Paul Sorensen announced that Select would provide handheld GPS devices with GMAP Iraq Global software to any colleague with a family member serving in Iraq. GPS devices are not standard military issue. “We applaud each family that is supporting loved ones serving our great nation,” said Sorensen. “We are just happy to help however we can.” Since the announcement, Select has purchased 12 devices (including software) from Adventure GPS for approximately $800 each and delivered them to the following family members of Select colleagues:
- Hospital Corpsman Second Class Aaron T. Newton – husband of Jaime Hillman (Executive Assistant based in Oceanside, California).
- Staff Sergeants Marc Anderson, Rawlin Anderson, and Riley Anderson – all three brothers are cousins of Paul Sorensen (President), Steve Sorensen (Chairman & CEO), and Kristen Sorensen (Account Manager based in Marina del Rey, California).
- First Sergeant Carlos Cano III and Staff Sergeant Felix Cano – brothers of Bianca Hutton (Personnel Supervisor based in Bakersfield, California).
- Tech Sergeant Patrick Holtzmann and Lieutenant Robert Mayes – nephews of Anne McCarthy (Training & Development Manager based in Clinton Township, Michigan).
- Airman First Class Victor Alcasas – brother of Art Alcasas (IS Technician based in Santa Barbara, California).
- Specialist Maxwell Dawson – brother of Shannon Hill (Branch Manager based in Natomas, California).
- Deb Chenier (Director of Major Accounts) and Milana Milosh (Regional Vice-President) also have cousins serving in Iraq.
These GPS devices not only benefit the individual soldier, they can be used by the entire unit. According to Select’s Deb Chenier, the timing was perfect. “My cousin, an Air Force sniper serving in Iraq, told me that his personal GPS was recently broken,” said Chenier. “He and his unit will be excited to hear that a replacement is on its way.”
For Paul Sorensen, Project GPS is a natural extension of Select’s pledge to become part of the fabric of each community they serve and to make a difference in people’s lives. “Whether it’s matching a person’s skills to their ideal job or helping a client drive business, we’re in the business of serving people. What better way to demonstrate our commitment than by supporting the families of our own colleagues?”
